Summers in the Midwest are short, and any Midwesterner knows how important it is to make the most of these warm months. Hanging out in the backyard with friends and family is a great way to make the most of the sunshine. To take advantage of the summer weather, here are four easy and popular events to host in your backyard this summer!

1. An Afternoon of Yard Games

Dig out those dusty yard games in the garage and call the neighbors over for an afternoon of fun in the backyard. The great thing about yard games is that they’re easy to set up, quick to clean up, and everyone can chat while they play. Some popular examples include bean bags, ladder golf, spike ball, or badminton. If the group is competitive, the day could be organized into a bracket tournament or round robin. If some guests would prefer to watch from the sidelines, you can shop outdoor chairs, cushioned seating, and more.

2. Outdoor Movie Night

If you’re looking for a more laid-back vibe, consider hosting an outdoor movie night. All you need is some comfortable outdoor seating and a projector (projectors can be found at almost any supermarket or online store). Put out a cooler with some beverages, a couple bowls of popcorn, and a few boxes of candy to bring out the movie theater essence. If you have space on the side of the house without windows, you can set up the projector approximately 10 feet away for the best video quality. Arrange the outdoor seating to face the screen and cozy up to watch your favorite flick.

3. Food and Fun Fire

Level up your campfire game with these upscale fire pits. Backyard fires are a great option for impromptu gatherings with neighbors and friends who happen to stop by. Go the traditional route and roast marshmallows over the fire, or add a bit of flair with a nighttime cocktail party by firelight. Regular size fire pits work well for relaxed roasting and chatting, while fire pit tables are better for deeper conversations and more organized gatherings.

4. Outdoor Dinner Party

Although a dinner party may take more planning, it could result in a party to remember! While it’s typically called a “dinner” party, don’t feel obligated to stick to dinner as the only mealtime: you can host a dinner, a brunch, or even a breakfast party. If you want your guests to be surprised, you can take full control of the menu. If you’d like a little help with the food, you can host a potluck-type event where everyone brings a dish to pass. You can decorate your backyard space with tablecloths, centerpieces, and your best dishes (or go casual with paper plates)! If you’re ambitious and looking to host the event of the summer, you could pull all four types of gatherings together for the ultimate shindig.
